Rare and beautiful polished Mexican amber. This specimen was expertly polished. The production of red amber is the smallest of any of the colors of Mexican amber. The red color comes from oxidation. Most red amber is discovered at the opening of the mine, which means that each mine only produces a finite amount. The red is only a thin layer on the outside of the amber. Underneath the red crust they amber is generally cognac or golden in color. To achieve the cherry red color when polished it is necessary to polish the amber very lightly and delicately so as to retain the thin outer crust that gives it the red color.
